Ham, the Space Chimp

Ham the space chimp was sent to outer-space in a Mercury capsule January 31,1961. This proceeded the sending of Gordo, who was the first monkey sent to space. Ham was the first ape sent to space. The purpose of sending monkeys to space was to see if humans could make it in space, since monkeys are the animal closest to humans. Scientists figured if a monkey could survive, so could a human. After Ham came back to Earth, he spent 17 years in the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and then was sent to a zoo in North Carolina until he died in 1983 at the age of 29. His body was buried at the International Space Hall Of Fame in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He has apperead on tv many times and was even in a movie with Evel Knievel.
