Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Elizabeth Anne Mary Windsor was born on April 21, 1926 in Mayfair, London. She was the first child born to the Duke and Dutchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. She was third in line to the throne after her father and uncle Edward, Prince of Wales. In 1930, her sister, Princess Margaret Rose was born. In 1936, King George V died. Edward, Prince of Wales, became king. He gave up the throne less than a year later and Princess Elizabeth's father, George, became king.

Princess Elizabeth was homeschooled throughout her childhood. She studied constitutional law, history, French, art and music. In 1947, She announced her engagement to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.Philip was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and the great great grandson of Queen Victoria. He and Elizabeth are distant cousins. They married on November 20, 1947. Their first son, Prince Charles, was born in 1948. His sister, Princess Anne, was born in 1950. After Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth, she gave birth to Prince Andrew in 1960. She is the first reigning sovereign to give birth since Queen Victoria. Four years later, her last child, Prince Edward, was born. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip also have eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

On February 2, 1952, King George VI, Elizabeth's father, died. She then became Queen Elizabeth II. Her coronation was on June 2, 1953. She had the first televised coronation of the British monarchy. In 1965, She was the first monarch to visit Germany in 52 years. The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee, 25 years as a monarch, in 1977. June 7, 1977 is now Jubilee Day. In 1972, She and Prince Philip celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Queen Elizabeth was the first British sovereign to visit the Middle East. In 2002, She celebrated her Golden Jubilee, which is fifty years as a monarch. Queen Victoria was the last to reach this significant achievement. On February 9, 2002, Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister, died at the age of 71. The Queen Mother died at the age of 101 on March 30, 2002. Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 59 years. She is the second longest reigning monarch in British history.
